Several procedures using either qualitative or quantitative petrographic examination techniques have been proposed over the past decade to assess the degree of damage in concrete structures. Some of these techniques have focused on large concrete structures exposed to the alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR). In this paper, we begin by presenting a review of the most relevant petrographic methods for concrete condition assessment. Next, the results obtained from petrographic examinations on several concrete specimens (core recovered from a dam, large concrete cubes and laboratory prisms) are discussed. Two methods, performed on polished slabs, have been used. One is based on fluorescent resin, uranyl acetate impregnation and image analysis, and serves to quantify both the degree of cracking and the amount of silica gel produced by AAR. The other method is known as the Damage Rating Index. The results obtained from these methods show that quantitative petrography can be successfully applied on concrete structures in order to assess the degree of deterioration and compare damage across different sections. Petrography could also be used to estimate the evolution stage of the alkali-aggregate reaction and therefore to assess the prediction of future expansion in the concrete specimen core.
