摘要

The petrographic investigations of the Samalut Formation north of El Minya town revealed four main limestone microfacies: grainstones, packstones, boundstones and, to a less extent, wackestones. Nummulites Gizehensis is the main rock-forming genera. Grainstones are more pronounced in the Samalut Formation exposed on the west of the Nile . On the other hand, packstones dominated in the localities of east bank of Nile. The authors attributed the studied Samalut limestone to reef deposits. The studied carbonates have been subjected to a variety of diagenetic alterations dominated by micritization, cementation, compaction, dissolution and neomorphism. Chemistry reveals some monotony in the distribution of major elements. Sodium and Sr have trend to escape during recrystallization in meteoric conditions. The other trace elements are rather impoverished as a result of low AIR- content and diagenetic alterations.
