Petrophysical Characteristics of Nukhul Formation, Northern Part of the Gulf of Suez, Egypt

This study is considered to be a trial to evaluate the petrophysical characteristics of the Nukhul Formation (Lower Miocene) in the northern part of the Gulf of Suez, Egypt. Computer-assisted interpretation was introduced to get adequate estimation of shale content, the effective porosity, the true resistivity, the water and hydrocarbon saturations. The elastic properties shear modulus, bulk compressibility, Poisson's ratio, formation strength index and reflectivity as well as velocities, are considered as being one of the most important steps in hydrocarbon exploration and defining the most appropriate relationships existing between the hydrocarbon / water contact. The elastic moduli ratios yield a number of parameters which help in the discrimination between the lithologic boundaries and oil / water contact. Finally, the obtained results were coordinated to illustrate vertical distribution of the hydrocarbon occurrence within the studied formation using the litho-saturation crossplots and elastic properties relationships. The obtained data revealed that the Nukhul Formation has a good category of reservoir and elastic properties are affected by presence of hydrocarbons in the upper part of this formation.
