Treatment and Dyeability of Acrylic Fibre and its Wool Blend With Some Organic Acids

Acrylic wool and acrylic/wool blend fibres are treated with some organic acids in order to improve their dyeability with cationic dyes. Formic, acetic, monochloroacetic, trichloroacetic, citric and isophthalic-5-sodiasulphonic acids were investigated in this study. The pretreatment of acrylic fabrics enhances significantly the affinity to cationic dye as well as decrease the glass transition temperature in the order acetic > formic > monochloroacetic > trichloroacetic > citric > isophthalic - 5 - sodiosulphonic acids. Good colour levelling was attained on the acid pretreated wool and acrylic/wool blend. Crocking and washing fastness were also advanced. Moisture regain, sinking and lateral migration characteristics of the acid - treated fabrics were quite improved. The acid - treatments of acrylic do not affect significantly its degree of polymerization and its average molecular weight.
