Chemical Constituents of Some Fungi and Their Antiviral Activity

The volatile constituents, as well as, the ether extracts of the two fungi Trichoderma harzianum Rifai and Trichoderma hamatum (Bon) Bain cultured in Weindling's medium were chemically and biologically investigated. GC/MS analysis of the volatile constituents revealed the identification of 29 and 34 components representing 76.41% and 87.82% of the total volatile constituents of T. harzianum and T. hamatum, respectively. cis-Calamenene followed by italicene, benzofuran and β-chamigrene were the major components of T. harzianum , while those of T. hamatum were cadinol tau followed by cubenol, globulol and α- cadinene. Four compounds were isolated from the ether extract of T. harzianum. They were identified by spectroscopic methods as a butenolide, scopo-rane, androstane derivative and fungisterol. Two compounds were isolated from T. hamatum., the first was identified as ethyl-15- methyl- hepta-decanoate and the second was found to be a mixture of three related compounds of hydroxy alkyl esters of octadecenoic acid. The volatile constituents and the ether extracts of the two fungi were evaluated for their activity as antiviral agents against HAV and Echovi-rus -9. The volatile constituents of the second fungus were found to be the most active.
