The seismic site response analysis of sand deposits requires an understanding of the dynamic properties of the soils involved. Most dynamic soil data available in the literature has been derived for sands which do not contain pumice. Consequently, the relevance of this data to the behaviour of pumice sands is unclear. An extensive experimental investigation of the dynamic response of a pumice sand was therefore undertaken. The liquefaction response obtained from cyclic triaxial tests, and the shear modulus variation with strain amplitude observed in bender element and dynamic torsion tests were examined.
