In order to study the influence on predators in the soil fauna of hormonal analogs used as pesticides, we used a chilopod, Eupolybothrus nudicornis. Several biological parameters were investigated in females: ovary weight, length of mature oocytes and hemo-lymphatic protein level. In controls, the ovary weights were significantly different between spring and autumn animals, in relation to the oocyte stages reached in these seasons. The mature oocyte lengths were approximatively constant in spring and autumn animals (ca 400 μm). Hemolymphatic protein levels in laboratory-maintained animals showed an increase in both spring and autumn animals. Nevertheless, significant differences were measured between these two series: hemolymph protein levels were characterised by a lesser increase. In 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) injected animals (1 μg/animal), we observed a decrease in oocyte length. Concerning the protein levels, the results were different according to the season: in spring, the level of this protein was rather constant (increasing in controls), whereas in autumn we observed an initial decrease, followed by an increase such that the level was comparable to that of controls at the end of the experimental series. In short, the oogenetic cycle of E. nudicornis is comparable to that of Lithobius forficatus, another chilopod. Results after 20E injection are also comparable to those recorded in L. forficatus. For further studies, protein hemolymphatic levels may provide the best parameter for our purpose.
