Eight species of Cellularine Bryozoans were compared, belonging to the family Bugulidae (Bugula neritina, B. fulva, B. stolonifera and B. angustiloba) and to the family Candidae {Scrupocellaria reptans, S. bertholleti and S. scruposa, Tricellaria inopinata). All the species have short-lived planktonic larval stages. Twenty populations were studied, taken from Europe (North Sea, English Channel, Bay of Biscay and lagoon of Venice) and Japan (Hokkaido Island). The electrophoregrams of a number of enzymatic systems were obtained on polyacrylamide gels with porosity gradient. The following systems were considered: acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, non specific esterases, leucine aminopepti-dase, malate dehydrogenase, malic enzyme, phosphoglucomutase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. The ubiquitous Bugula neritina (known as a common fouling organism, tolerant of environmental conditions) shows the greatest affinities among the different populations. The other species, having more discontinuous distributions, exhibit a greater genetic divergence: in particular for Bugula fulva and Scrupocellaria reptans; each population seems to have evolved independently from the others. In general the populations at the extremes of the geographic range considered (Texel, The Netherlands, and Venice, Italy) are the most divergent. Also Bugula stolonifera shows a small number of co-occu-ring bands; the population from the Arcachon harbour, having a completely different pro-teinogram, has been probably introduced recently, while the one from Le Havre harbour could be issued of successive conspecific introductions from different geographic sources. Very low affinities were present among the zymograms of the examined species of a given genus. However, the phenotypes that could be used a species markers, though existent, are generally few and the diagnostic systems differ according to individual species. Strong affinities were revealed between the Italian and Japanese populations of Tricellaria inopinata, thus confirming the probable North Pacific geographic origin of the population invasive in the lagoon of Venice.
