This paper completes some previous observations on the enzymatic polymorphism of Electra pilosa (Linnaeus, 1767), a cheilostomatous bryozoan, from Northern Brittany, Wales, British coasts of the Channel, and Norway. Our data concerns populations from the Basque coast (Guetary), Charente-Maritime (Oleron island ; Fouras) and Jersey ; they confirm that the genetic divergence in the marine sessile species can be emphasized in the case of insular populations, and that a long larval life and capacities of dispersion increase the genetic brewing and genetic homogeneity of populations on a large scale - much more than species with a short larval life and metamorphosing in situ. Among enzymatic systems, alkaline phosphatase and non-specific esterases are the better markers of clinal variation in this species. Malate dehydrogenase and aminopeptidase leucine are good indicators of monospecificity. The comparison of phenograms of Basque populations of Electra pilosa and E. vertidllata cannot confirm the hypothesis of their monospecificity ; if these species are distinct according to the numerous biological characters analyzed by BOBIN and PRENANT, other authors conclude that E. vertidllata could be a morphotype of E. pilosa. Their zymograms are identical for the main enzymatic systems.
