The reproductive cycle of Donax trunculus (Mollusca : Bivalvia) at two sandy beaches located in the Northeast of the Gulf of Tunis (Kalaat Andalous and Raoued), was studied monthly, from November 1999 to October 2000. The physical and chemical characteristics, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH of the two stations were measured each month. For the histological study, a sample of thirty mature individuals, shell length 18 to 30 mm, was collected at each station. Gonad development was analysed using the histological method proposed by MARTOJA and MARTOJA (1967). Microscopic examination of gonad sections allowed the assignment of each specimen to a stage of gonadal development according to the maturity scale of LUBET (1959). The condition index of WALNE and MANN (1975) was applied to forty individuals/station/month. This complementary method allowed a better understanding of the fluctuations within the sexual cycle. Both females and males showed a synchronism in the gametogenic evolution throughout the period studied. The sexual cycle was extended in time and even continuous. Gametogenic activity started with the decreasing temperature in December and ended in July-August. Spawning activity began in January and continued until July or in some cases August. After the summer spawning, animals were in the resting stage until November. During this period, individuals showed a weight increase due to the accumulation of reserves in the somatic tissue. The inactive stage did not concern the entire population: some mature specimens were observed throughout the period studied showing different stages of maturity.
