Assessment of harbour sediments toxicity and their effects when dumped in the sea is very difficult. Chemical analyses are often used. Guide values N1 and N2 have also been published in the arrete du 14 juin 2000 . On the other hand, biological indices (IB) were established in Britain, about twenty years ago. They allow us to estimate the impact of different quantities of organic matter on the distribution of different ecological groups (GLEMAREC & HILY.1981). Lastly, very recently, a risk score method synthesizing present knowledge of the behaviour of heavy metals and their respective toxicity, has been introduced by IFREMER (ALZIEU et al, 1999; ALZIEU, 2001). Studies were performed in our laboratory between 1990 and 1999 in the maritime harbours of Boulogne-sur-Mer, Calais and Dunkirk, in areas where sediments are dumped into the sea and in a neighbouring zone called the reference area. First, we characterized physical and chemical parameters of the sediment qualities and those of the associate macrofauna which indicate the biological qualities of the mud. The main techniques are summarized in Materiel et Methodes and were reviewed in detail in DHAINAUT-COURTOIS (2000) and DHAINAUT-COURTOIS et al. (2000a). The list of all the taxa collected (tabl. 2), forms a contribution to our regional knowledge. In fact, referring to the data gathered in a recent synthesis (DHAINAUT-COURTOIS, 2000) with the help of a precise model (harbour of Boulogne-sur-Mer), the present study essentially intends to examine several methods used (biological indices, GEODE levels and risk scores) and to debate their respective value for estimating dredged sediment ecotoxicity. Briefly, if the results, based on numerous analyses (tabl. 3), are subsequently confirmed, the combined use of IB and risk score methods could be recommended to harbour managers. Measurement of IB could be performed first. Mandatory chemical analyses (arrete du 14 juin 2000) would then only be required to explain a poor IB (high level of organic matters, heavy metals...) when this is above A.
