摘要

For many years, educators have wanted to validate the use of technology in the classroom, as they have recognized the need for students and employees to perform well in a digital world. Not so long ago, I would visit secondary school classes and see banks of large dusty desktops along the sides of the rooms. These computers were bought in good faith by administrators who wanted to provide advanced equipment, and yet these appeared to be hardly ever used. Also, the very configuration of space, with desktops facing a wall, limited any social interaction with the class. Now we know that students prefer to work with educational materials online, not through paper textbooks, and the choice of medium is likely to be portable, rather than a large, heavy, and stationary device. Although there has been much discussion about whether students prefer online to face-to-face classrooms, it appears that the trend is toward blended classrooms, as opposed to fully online or traditional face-to-face, as reported in the most recent Educause study of undergraduate use of technology (Dahlstrom, Christopher Brooks, Pomerantz, & Reeves, 2016).
