Instructors have a range of options, from leaving students to their own devices and assessing only end results (e.g., a group paper or a presentation), to incorporating objectives into the assignment that serve to raise awareness and foster effective collaboration. The latter has been shown to increase group success as well as group satisfaction, particularly in students who may not have had formal training in group processes (Bonanno, Jones, & English, 1998). Deliberate engagement with communication theory and practice is indicated for career success in a workplace that consistently ranks oral and interpersonal skills at the top of skills desired by employers ("Playing Well With Others," 2002; Tuleja & Greenhalgh, 2008).
