WERE YOU AWARE that there exists a relationship between the seemingly disparate topics of "bad news letters" and "cheeseburgers"? A Google search will reveal that several websites inform business communication students and practitioners that the structure of a letter or memo containing negative news may visually be conceived as a cheeseburger. More specifically, the top bun—the introduction of the letter—should contain background information. The cheese layer corresponds to providing reasons for having to deliver bad news. The third component of the burger, the meat itself, is associated with delivering the bad news. Finally, the bottom bun represents the closing of the letter, in which the writer attempts to glimpse a positive future.
