Several months ago, a reporter from the Los Angeles Times called me about an article she was writing on the "crisis in basic communication skills" among MBA students. She wanted to know what my university was doing about it. I quickly assessed that she was pushing her thesis about the "skills crisis," impervious to any other point of view. She was calling to gather examples to illustrate what she had already concluded. Despite several attempts to influence her thinking, "We're teaching investor presentations, visual communication, strategy and storytelling," I failed: My point of view about graduate-level instruction in communication would not appear in print because it was at odds with her preconceived notions.
