Second homes: they're where you want them, furnished to your impeccable taste, and available to you, family, and friends whenever you want. Problem is, if you're like most vacation-home owners, you escape to your getaway only three to five weeks annually. But the mortgage, taxes, and insurance? You're billed for the full year. Now when you're in for a dime, you're not in for the whole dollar. The ' travel and real estate industries have overhauled the concept of second home ownership by creating private residence clubs and destination clubs. By spreading the cost of second homes over multiple owners, these variations on a theme enable consumers to pay for vacation hornet only to the extent they use them. Club members pay one-time fees that are a fraction of the price of a year-round second home, and maintenance costs are also tiny by comparison.
