Force Limited Vibration Testing Applied to the Fourier Transform Spectrometer Instrument of SCISAT-1

The Fourier Transform Speclrometer (FTS) is the primary instrument onboard the SCISAT-1 satellite that was successfully launched in August 2003. Vibration testing of the FTS flight model was performed in July 2002. To prevent damage to the sensitive equipment of the FTS, vibration testing was performed using the Force Limited Vibration (FLV) approach. The purpose of this approach is to reduce the overtesting that occurs during conventional vibration testing of space hardware, because of the difference in boundary conditions between flight and test configurations. In addition to controlling the input acceleration, FLV testing measures and limits the reaction force between the test item and the shaker. This force limiting results in acceleration notching at predominant natural frequencies of the test item. The paper presents a brief summary of the overtesling problem associated with conventional vibration testing. A review of the semi-empirical approach of FLV for deriving the force limits follows. The FTS test item and the test set-up are then described. The test procedures, test levels, and force limits are discussed. This includes the presentation of the test results and relevant discussion. The use of FLV resulted in reduction of overtesting along two of the three excitation axes, with a significant reduction for one of these two axes. The paper also presents a comparison of accelerations at the base of the FTS between instrument-level and spacecraft-level testing (performed in August 2002). The comparison indicates that, despite the overtesting reduction obtained from the use of the FLV approach, the vibration level for the FTS testing by itself was significantly higher than the vibration level it was subjected to during the subsequent spacecraft vibration testing.
