摘要

As a kid in Nova Scotia during the 1950s and early 1960s, I was close to my grandparents, great aunts and great uncles. They were born between 1896 and 1914, the generation that came of age in the roaring 'twenties, endured the Great Depression, and saw service, often in leadership roles because of their age, during the Second World War. Uncle Bill I knew least well because his career as a chemist took him to Montreal and ultimately to a research position with the Department of National Defence in Ottawa, but he was an exotic and fascinating figure.
