We use Arnhem as a base for touring the Rhineland battles of February-March 1945 as well as the "Market Garden" battlefields. If you are following our suggested itinerary the drive from Kapelsche Veer to Arnhem will take about two hours. Follow the signs to Centrum and the railway station if you are staying in the centre of the city. Once you are settled in the Arnhem area there is a great deal to do and see and you may have to make some tough choices. We begin with a full day devoted to Operation "Market Garden" and the Arnhem battlefields of September 1944. Start your tour at the Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek which is situated in the Hartenstein Hotel, the headquarters of 1st Airborne Division. The Airborne Memorial and the Military Cemetery are nearby. If you wish to tour the entire battlefield there are excellent guide books available at the Museum store and at the Dutch Tourism Office (VVV) located beside the train station and opposite the Haarhuis Hotel in Arnhem. Canadians should make a special effort to visit the memorial to the Royal Canadian Engineers who were responsible for the final evacuation of troops across the Rhine.
