Seventh Brigade, supported by a squadron of the Fort Garry Horse, a battery from the 3rd Anti-Tank Regiment and the guns of the 12th Field Regiment, watched over Calais while the battle for Boulogne was fought. Seventh Recce Regiment was employed on a variety of tasks around the perimeter. Civilians had provided detailed information on the defences. The land south of Calais had been flooded and the only dry approaches were strongly defended. Any advance from the west would have to contend with the strongly-defended Noires Mottes super heavy battery of cross-Channel guns and the hardly less impressive positions at Sangettc and Vieux Coquelles. From the east the city was protected by a ring of gun positions and machine gun posts reinforced by two enormous railway guns. Inside the first perimeter a second arc of concrete defences surrounded the inner town of Calais. Fortunately the garrison was considerably less impressive than the defences.
