Crunch. Yum! Slurp. Sweet! Squirt. Wow! There's no denying that confections can have a great taste. A plain chocolate bar, an old-fashion lollipop, or a liquid-filled piece of gum are all delicious in their own right. But when manufacturers combine additives - that's when the real fun starts. New products with deeper complexity can offer more intricate flavors, and increased nutritional benefits. In the additive ingredient market, a majority of manufacturers still heavily focus on creating sugar substitutes. Beneo, a functional ingredients company, boasts the creation of two sugar replacers, both of which are used in a variety of confections. "Many of our ingredients give manufacturers a way to provide multiple benefits to consumers," says Joe O'Neil, Beneo's president and general manager. "Our ISOMALT ingredient is the only sugar replacer derived from sugar beets, so it has a similar sweetening profile to sugar."
