A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, as Mary Poppins would say, and snack and energy bar manufacturers seem to be following her advice. For years consumers have bought snack and energy bars for their nutritional benefits but not necessarily for taste. New products coming out from several different companies, however, feature nutrient-dense products with improved taste. Nestle-owned PowerBar has introduced two products within the past year that fit the energy-bar-as-candy trend. The PowerBar Triple Threat line includes four varieties that "fuel like a PowerBar and taste like a candy bar," according to the company's press release. Two of the flavors, Caramel Peanut Fusion and Chocolate Caramel Fusion, combine layers of peanuts and caramel while Chocolate Peanut Butter Crisp and Caramel Peanut Crisp feature crunchy rice crisps. The bars are marketed toward men who previously never associated energy bars with taste.
