It has been an extraordinary year for the smart cards industry. The number of projects rolled out worldwide continued to grow, demonstrating the versatility and robustness of the technology. Unsurprisingly, ePassport deployments continued to build pace. EMV-based payment systems came online and contactless technology took major steps in Asia Pacific and North America. Government and corporate ID schemes continued to break new ground, with significant schemes being either announced or rolled out. But it wasn't just the size and nature of deployments that characterised the industry during 2005 - it was also a year of consolidation and mega-mergers.
