While the smart card market in the Americas has historically lagged behind Europe and Asia Pacific, a number of market factors are now starting to drive smart card deployment in both North and South America. An increased focus on security, the growth in identity theft, the migration of mobile telecommunications operators to GSM technology, the growth in payment fraud in Latin America, and a new focus on consumer payment convenience are all contributing to the implementation of new smart card-based applications. This article takes a look at the opportunities for smart cards in Latin America and highlights key Smart Card Alliance efforts that are intended to expand the market for smart cards in Latin America.
