Most of us link personal happiness to our work. We measure our success by the way in which we are evaluated by our friends, colleagues, and, above all, our patients. Dentistry as an avocation is a high risk for happiness because public service increases the number of evaluations by a diversity of the people. Unlike those who face an annual performance review, dentists are evaluated daily by every patient he or she sees in the office. It's easy for dentists to become addicted to acceptance, and to allow our fear of personal rejection to influence our professional recommendations.
