Over the 12 months ending in December 1997, real or inflation-adjusted consumer spending grew by 3.7%, according to the U.S. Commerce Department data. And once again, computer sales led the pack in terms of the fastest-growing component of real personal consumption. By type of product, consumer durable goods expenditures posted the strongest gain in 1997 followed by the growth in spending on consumer services and then on nondurable goods. That was a change from 1996 when services saw the largest gain.
