In 1995, the picture was only slightly less rosy for the European chemical industry than in 1994, when the industry decisively turned the corner from recession to upturn. Chemical production in Western Europe grew 2.5% in volume in 1995, although growth varied widely among countries. Although the year as a whole showed growth in output and demand, the statistics do not take into account the quarterly records. After an exceptionally strong first-quarter performance, and strong second and third quarters, the industry saw a serious slump in the fourth quarter to levels below those reached in the corresponding quarter in 1994.
