In 2007, global chemical fiber production increased by 3.5 million tons or 8 % to 48.0 million tons. In 2008, global production decreased by 2.2 million tons or 6 % to 45.8 million tons. Outside of China there were mainly production decreases to report.rnThe world production of textile fibers decreased by 4.1 million tons or 5.5 % to 72 million tons (Table 1). In total, natural fiber production was able to achieve 26.8 million tons (-7 %).rnWithin chemical fibers, 42.6 million tons (-4 %) were synthetic fibers (including PP film fibers (tapes) and spunbonds) and 3.2 million tons (-13%) cellulosic fibers (including acetate cigarette filter tow). In this way, global synthetic fiber production decreased by nearly 2 million tons and cellulosic fibers by 350,000 tons.
