Beryllium, the element, has the lowest atomic weight of the alkaline earths (Column IIA) and is reasonably rare. It is a hard, shiny metal with a high melting point and high electrical conductivity. The oxide has high resistivity, while maintaining high thermal conductivity. These physical properties make it useful in many applications; its usefulness often outweighs its undeniable toxicity.rnMix beryllium with a little aluminum and silicon and you get the mineral beryl.1 Trace metals give beryl an incredible range of colors, from red to green. Clear beryl is called goshe-nite. A bit of chromium transforms it to green beryl, or emerald. Various combinations of iron, magnesium, manganese, and vanadium produce blue, yellow, pink or red gemstones, commonly know as aquamarine, heliodo, morganite and red beryl or bixite, respectively.
