For many years, individual research and testing laboratory spaces have been built in a modular fashion from a "2 person" laboratory to a "4 or 6 person lab" within an area that varies from less than 100 square feet per person, commonly seen only in academic research institutions, to over 300 square feet per person, as seen in pharmaceutical and other industrial laboratories. Laboratory spaces of two modules, for four to six persons, may be separated from adjacent laboratories by fire-rated floor and full height wall assemblies and have dimensions from 20 to 24 ft wide and 20 to 35 ft long (Figure 1). This is the building block of traditional laboratory design.
