Monsanto has completed a previously announced $200 million expansion project at its Luling, LA, glyphosate plant and is set to begin defending its business practices at a public Department of Justice inquiry into consolidation of the seeds industry. Competitors have accused Monsanto of anti-competitive practices. Monsanto says the Luling expansion boosts Monsanto's capacity to produce glyphosate by 20%. Monsanto says it still plans to reach its goal of doubling gross profit by 2012 over 2007 levels, with its seeds and traits business more than offsetting the sharply lower glyphosate sales.
