Historians are divided as to whether JohannesnBrahms (1833–1897), whose music is among thenmost beloved and masterful in history, actually madenthe above remark on taking his leave from a party.n1,2nBut there is little doubt that he could have. Brahmsnwas possessed of a crusty personality, and even long,nclose friendships with Clara Schumann and the violinnvirtuoso Josef Joachim were frequently punctuatednby bursts of rancor and thoughtlessness. Brahms’npersonality was probably influenced by humiliatingnchildhood experiences playing the piano in Hamburgnbordellos to augment the meager family income,nalthough considerable debate persists as to the exactnnature of these episodes.n3–5 Also, the overwhelmingnexpectations thrust on him by no less than RobertnSchumann and Hans von Bulow (the leading musicncritic of the day) as the successor to Bach andnespecially Beethoven contributed an additional hugenpsychic burden. Indeed, it is a measure of his geniusnthat Brahms was able to meet and even exceed thesendaunting predictions.
