If you have family members who are active in the company you are running-whether or not you yourself are part of the family-you must be scrupulous about treating them just as you would anyone else. "If you tell family members they can take time off for kids' sports events or that they can have extra vacation, apply the same rules to everyone else, no matter what," cautions Larry Siff. 2. Be prepared to make the tough decisions. "If you don't have the intestinal fortitude to tell Aunt Betty or Uncle Bobby that they have to leave," advises Tom Hook, "it is extremely tough to make progress because you won't have the respect of the rest of the people." 3. Don't let family members report to each other. As much as everyone will do his or her best to be impartial and professional, such a situation creates as much confusion and tension in the office as it does at family dinners, says Siff.
