Military enterprises in China reportedly total 1,000 (each consisting of multiple factories, marketing organisations and research units), as well as over 200 major research institutes, which all fall under the administration of the 10 corporations. Each enterprise is often a sizeable conglomerate in itself. Chengdu Aircraft Engine Corporation, for instance, incorporates some 16 factories, four research institutes and 11 branch companies, with more than 40 JV and approximately 20,000 employees.
