By using a simple and low-cost arc-discharge method in deionized water, high purity Fe_3O_4 nanoparticles have been synthesized on large scale. The structure of these nanoparticles has been studied by means of transmission electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. The synthesized Fe_3O_4 nanoparticles show well-defined spherical shape, with diameters ranging from 10 to 30 nm and the average diameter about 20 nm. By investigating the effects of the different processing conditions, optimum parameters were obtained. Moreover, the size of the as-grown nanoparticles can also be controlled through adjusting the processing parameters. These Fe_3O_4 nanoparticles were magnetic materials, showing saturation magnetization of 64.97 emu/g at room temperature.
