The subject of design and synthesis of molecular-based ferromagnets is one of the main challenges in the field of molecular materials. Along this line, the first important step is synthesizing molecular entities with a large spin in the ground state. Recently, Kahn has pointed out that it is possible for ABA linear trinuclear species with local spins 2S_A > S_B + 1/2 to stabilize a state of high-spin multiplicity with no need of imposing ferromagnetic interactions between the nearest neighbor magnetic centers. Several ABA trinuclear complexes with [Cu(pba)]~(2-) bridge (where pba stands for propylene-1, 3-bis (oxamato)) have been reported. However, to our knowledge, no o-phenylene-bis(oxamato) bridged Mn(Ⅱ)Cu(Ⅱ)Mn(Ⅱ) complex has been reported. This note deals with the synthesis and characterization of three new heterotrinuclear complexes, namely {[Mn(L)_2]_2[Cu(ebo)]}-(ClO_4)_2 (where ebo = o-phenylene-bis(oxamado), L = 1, 10-phenanthroline (phen), 5-nitro-1, 10-phenanthroline (NO_2-phen) and 2, 2′-bipyridyl (bpy)). The magnetic analysis of {[Mn(phen)_2]_2 [Cu(ebo)]}(ClO_4)_2 • H_2O indicates that there is an antiferromagnetic coupling between manganese(Ⅱ) and copper(Ⅱ) ions. The χ_M T versus T plot exhibits a minimum at about 198 K, which is the characteristic of this kind of complex with an irregular spin-state structure.
