Recently more attention has been paid to the study of lasing without population inversion. It has been found that many schemes, with the help of optical coherence or quantum interference effect, may establish such optical phenomenon as that in refs. [1—7]. In those laser models, in order to have the optical gain on the corresponding transition a coherent pump is required to drive the systems, and additional pumps, coherent or incoherent, are also required. In 1993, Zhu Yifu presented a simple four-level model where only a single driving laser is required, The model can exhibit lasing without inversion on any state basis. In this note, we propose a closed three-level atomic model driven by a single pump field, perhaps the simplest pumping three-level scheme. By using the density-matrix equations, we study the steady-state behavior for the system and show that the simple system can exhibit inversionless laser between the lower excited state and the ground state.
