A survey of the Firth of Forth Rail Bridge and the Forth Road Bridge has been carried out using a laser scanner attached to a coastguard rescue boat. The survey, covering a portion of the bridges, was part of a trial to test the suitability of laser scanning for Historic Scotland. Renishaw carried out the survey for the Centre for Digital Documentation and Visualisation; a collaboration between Historic Scotland and Glasgow School of Art. A Trimble MX2 single-head laser scanner was installed on the front of the rescue boat and taken underneath both the road and rail bridges. Further scanning was done by sailing alongside the bridges. Photographic imagery was also collected to aid with digital modelling and colourisation. The scan took one day, with a further three hours to process the data.
