摘要

On November 2 when the famed acrobat Nik Wallenda stepped out onto a steel cable that had been stretched between two Chicago skyscrapers, he stood in the windy night air roughly 600 ft above the Chicago River without a net or a harness to protect him. But as he successfully completed his tightrope act as part of a Discovery Channel television special, Wallenda was not completely vulnerable. In addition to his own experience and training and the professional crew that assisted him, the 35-year-old aerialist benefited from careful preparation that included the expertise of engineers from Thornton Tomasetti's Chicago office. These engineers had examined the rooftop locations on each of the three buildings at which the tightrope setups were secured to confirm that the sites could accommodate the additional loads that would be imposed. Wallenda walked along one tightrope to the second building and then along a second tightrope to the third building. The engineers also examined the locations on these buildings and on several nearby buildings at which certain stabilizing guy wires were connected, as well as the scaffolding, platforms, and additional cables that supported cameras, lighting, and other equipment used during the event.
