Corps Outlines Plan For Boosting Coastal Resilience in Northeast

The northeastern part of the country is growing increasingly vulnerable to coastal storms and rising sea levels caused by climate change, according to a report recently issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. And while the focus on the region has increased since the devastation caused in 2012 by Hurricane Sandy, this part of the country includes numerous high-risk areas in which conditions have not been sufficiently analyzed. In January the Corps's National Planning Center for Coastal Storm Risk Management released the North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study, the fruit of a two-year effort to develop a plan to reduce coastal flood risks throughout the region. In addition to outlining a series of planning approaches that could be used by federal, state, and local governments to reduce risk, the report includes detailed storm modeling to inform additional studies by coastal engineers and economists.
