Vocational colleges must be many things and must offer a variety of disparate, yet specialized, courses for many types of students. The £45-million (U.S.$68.5-million) all-in-one campus building that is under construction in the United Kingdom for Cardiff and Vale College will serve that purpose and offer the community a fine dining establishment at its top as well. The building will also feature spacious rooftop terraces and a public atrium paying homage to the covered arcades of the city's shopping districts. The 16,000 m~2, wedge-shaped building includes two sections that wrap around three sides of a tiered, central pod. The teaching "wrap" and the accommodation "wrap" access shared resources, including a library and a computer area. Elevated steel bridges cross a central, covered atrium in the pod. The wrap sections and the pod are formed with flat slabs of post-tensioned, reinforced concrete that are connected by movement joints at critical junctions. As a whole, the structure steps from six stories on the northern edge of the site to three stories on the southern edge. The campus will be constructed atop a remediated brownfield in the hope of spurring development in a neglected area of Cardiff.
