More than a decade ago, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) embarked on the $4.6-billion Water System Improvement Program, an ambitious undertaking designed to upgrade seismically vulnerable components of its water delivery system and ensure service for its 2.6 million customers in the event of a major earthquake. Comprising more than 80 infrastructure projects, the program is now more than 75 percent complete. As of mid-December the SFPUC was nearing another milestone as it prepared to open bids on the construction contract for the Peninsula Pipeline Seismic Upgrade, the last of 22 water pipeline improvement projects to be carried out as part of the Water System Improvement Program. Construction is expected to begin in April.
