Faced with the large, open space of a former dry dock, the designers of the new M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark made a bold decision: construct the new museum below grade and around the former dock, which would be left open to the sky and spanned by a series of innovative bridges. The bridges also form part of the new museum building, leading both down into the galleries and across the dock to the museum's former home in a castle that is on the World Heritage hist.
