Situation: A green card holder and ASCE member accepts a position at a small U.S. design firm. Almost immediately he becomes the target of ethnic jokes by one of his colleagues, a civil engineer who also is a member of ASCE. In meetings and other discussions with the immigrant and fellow staff members, the colleague often mimics the immigrant's accent and belittles his command of English. He also makes frequent derisive references to the immigrant's style of dress and his non-Western name, and he sometimes emails jokes related to the immigrant's race and nationality to others in the office. When the immigrant complains to his supervisor, the supervisor promises to speak to the colleague, but the supervisor either fails to do so or fails to enforce a change in behavior. When the immigrant again takes the matter up with his supervisor, it becomes clear that the latter does not think the colleague s behavior is a serious matter.
