I firmly believe that leadership development is essential at all stages of your career. Part of being a leader in your profession means keeping up with recent developments to prepare yourself for new opportunities and challenges. I want to encourage each of you to challenge yourself this year, as I am challenging myself, to acquire a deeper knowledge of at least one key facet of civil engineering practice. May I suggest developing a greater understanding of the practice of engineering sustainable infrastructure? It's no secret that designing and building sustainable infrastructure are becoming critical as our current infrastructure continues to age. Until recently, there was no system for gauging the extent to which an infrastructure project in the United States conforms to the principles of sustainable development.
