When north carolina State University (NC State) began searching for a firm to design a library for one of its campuses, it took an unconventional approach. It invited six firms to attend a weekend charette during which each team was assigned a pair of students to work with and given studio space to develop a proposal. Members of the school's selection committee dropped in on the teams to observe the process each used to develop its design and to see how the students figured in that process.
