When the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of the State of New York (MTA) shuttered New York City's Cortlandt Street R Subway Station in 2005, the goal was to reopen it as soon as the work was complete. The work involved constructing an underpass to connect the station to the neighboring World Trade Center as part of a larger subway connectivity project. But when it was discovered that the station's southbound platform had settled as a result of nearby construction, the MTA pledged to have the station fully operational by September 11, 2011, the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
