In an attempt to combat the adverse effects of global warming and the urban heat island effect, Mongolia has embarked on an experiment to store a giant block of ice to help cool and irrigate a city during the summer. Scientists in Ulan Bator (Ulaanbaatar), the country's capital, intend to create the ultra-thick slabs of ice that occur naturally in far northern climates when water repeatedly flows over ice and freezes.
