THE AVIATION DEPARTMENT of the City of Phoenix is currently building a 5 mi long automated people mover (APM) system at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The purpose of this secondary transportation system within the airport is to relieve roadway congestion, minimize wait times and travel times for passengers, and provide climate-controlled waiting areas. Known as the PHX Sky Train, the system will connect terminals, parking facilities, a rental car center, and the recently constructed Metro light-rail system in Phoenix (see the plan on page 71). Stage 1 of the project includes the design and construction of more than 230 drilled shafts supporting three stations and approximately 9,000 ft of elevated guideway, the latter for passing over existing concourse walkways, bridges, a taxiway, and buildings. The foundation system will support relatively high axial loads, lateral loads, and moments resulting from the height of the guideway above the ground surface.
