AN INNOVATIVE interceptor sewer recently constructed for Lake Oswego, Oregon, consists of approximately 10,000 ft of buoyant pipeline and another 7,000 ft of pipeline supported by steel piles. The system extends the length of the prominent water body for which the town is named. Completed in April, the $95-million project known as the Lake Oswego Interceptor Sewer was needed to alleviate seismic risks and increase the capacity of the city's interceptor sewer.Located south of Portland, the city of Lake Oswego surrounds Oswego Lake, a naturally occurring water body that was dammed to raise the lake surface 22 ft and form its current surface area of 440 acres. Building an interceptor through the lake was not a new concept for the city, which constructed the existing interceptor in the same lake approximately 50 years ago.
